Artist Statement
I’m
going to be honest, I don’t like taking pictures or videos of myself while
working out. If I do I find it takes my focus away from doing what I am
supposed to be doing and pushing myself. That’s the biggest reason I don’t have
any pictures of me working out in my digital story. For this reason I decided
to structure my digital story a little different then I originally planned and instead
put more emphasis on soccer rather than showing my 30 day challenge. I decided
to show the reason I picked the 30 day training challenge. I still wanted the
main point that was shown in the pictures to be progress, so I used several
pictures of me playing soccer over the years. From when I was only 6 years old
all the way up until last season. To help show the progression I outlined my
pictures with comments in the corners that specifically pointed out my
progression for the viewers.
In the beginning I also tried to tap
into the viewers emotions by showing the relationship between my brother and me
from the moment I was born. Once I laid that foundation I decided to build on
it and share how he was constantly there for support growing up. Then once I
started talking about a schedule I knew that was my chance to start circling my
story back to Jared. That is where I mentioned a schedule and the lesson I learned
from my challenge and how I figured out that Jared was trying to help and that I
should have listened to him. I mentioned all that to tell the viewers the
lesson I learned and hopefully help them to not make the same mistakes. When it
came to the end I knew I needed to conclude with where I started, which meant bringing
my story back Jared and his constant support. I chose to point out that even
though he is getting married and moving out I know he will always be there for
me when I need him. By the end of my story I wanted to be sure that I showed
how much I truly appreciate and love my brother and all that he has done through
the few stylistic choices I made.
Reflection
My
favorite part of this class would have to be my 30 day challenge. Working out
was amazing, and seeing my progress was so exciting! When the blog assignment began I was
intimidated at first because I had never done anything like it before, but it
turned out to be very enlightening. I enjoyed using my blog as motivation for
others. It felt good to know that by chance someone could stumble across my
blog and maybe read my posts and be encouraged to start a routine if they
haven’t already, or to keep going if they have already started. The only trouble I had while creating my blog
was making another page and having it show up. That was the only problem I ran
into. If they would of made that easier I would of had no complaints. Honestly,
the only thing I would of done differently while writing my blog would have
been setting apart more time out of my day to revise and edit each post. I
would of liked to spend more time on composing each post as well.
One
thing I forgot to do during my 30 day challenge was to take pictures! I should
of because I needed them for my digital story. So I improvised and decided to
take a different approach than planned, and I think it turned out alright. I
was such a perfectionist when recording, because of that I recorded my voice
maybe twenty times. Then, when I started to finish I tried to add music in the
background, but that took forever. Maybe it is just because I am not gifted
with the knowledge of using computer systems or doing anything on a computer,
but it took me maybe thirty minutes before I finally figured it out. So again,
I had a blast making my digital story, and only ran into one obstacle when
making it. Something I probably would of done different is I would have taken
more pictures during my challenge.
Finally,
I added my intro essay from the first days of class, but when adding it I made
a fairly big change. When I added it to my blog I removed the very last
paragraph because it didn’t fit into the rest of the essay.
Even
though all of these were school assignments, I think they were a creative and
interesting way to approach learning different skills that I will later need in
life. I learned how to make a blog, and how much effort it actually takes to
keep up on it. A blog is not just a diary but so much more, it can be a way to
motivate others or to share ideas with others. Through the digital story I learned
there are many different ways you can use pathos. You can use it in the tone of
your voice the pictures or videos you show, a black screen, or even the music
in the background. I hope I get to use all of the things I learn in life later
because I learned there is a joy in writing. I just needed to learn what enjoy writing.
